I weigh myself every morning and most evenings. I am sure that this has come as a result of being on and off diets for the past 20 years of my life. I have become obsessed over a stupid number. I recently read an article that was titled “4 signs it is time to Step off the Scale”, this really hit home with me and made me realize that I am letting a little number dictate how my day is going to go. When the number is down, I step off the scale smiling and have a jump in my step all day but when the number goes up (or stays the same when I expect a loss), I feel frustrated and disappointed with myself.
The article that I read also said the following
“The scale is a tool for healthy living, not a measure for success. We should only depend on it as a means of keeping us on track, not to evaluate our success or determine our attitude. It will never calculate how healthy we are inside. It will never declare our value & worth. Being healthy is so much more than a mere number on the scale. Health takes in our emotional, physical & mental wellness. A number will never reflect all that. Don’t allow the scale to dictate your progress”
I have printed this off and it is now stuck to my bathroom mirror to gently remind me that it is just a number!
I have decided that instead of always measuring my success by the scale I will use other means. I have been keeping a consistent record of my measurements and unlike weight these don’t fluctuate on a day to day basis. I will also track other indicators of health such as my energy level, stress level and self esteem. These other measure may not change overnight but they do have a bigger impact on my overall well being and quality of life.
With all that being said I am not going cold turkey but I will promise to put the scale away and only allow myself to use it one time each week. I will not let a number dictate how my day will start off!
